MELLIUS
Mellius is a Dutch visual artist and writer, based in Amsterdam.
IMMERSIVE ART INSTALLATIONS
His portfolio includes big art, immersive art,
multimedia installations, oil on canvas paintings,
photographs, fashion, jewellery, pencil drawings, video art and electronic music. His goal is to create complete alternate realities, in which people can be submerged and disconnected from the outside world, to experience something new.
MAGICAL REALISM
The inspiration for his art comes from his own stories. ´I am a slave to my own stories´ he likes to joke. ´I have to write them down, I have no other choice´.
His first published novel is about war, disease and a young woman, disguised as a boy, who goes on a quest to find an antidote for the ´Inter Human Allergy´.
The genre could best be described as magical realism. Magic is to be found and so are certain magical creatures, but they reside in a grim apocalyptic world, laced with historical references and military scenery.
The reader is invited to follow Oxzana on her quest for freedom and peace for her village. She goes bravely into the world, beause she has no other choice but to venture into the lion's den in search for answers.

ATELIER
MELLIUS
The new atelier complex in Amstelveen that is currently under construction is thus called 'Nightglow Nurseries'.
NIGHTGLOW NURSERIES
For the last 15 years Mellius has been constructing alternate realities, writing and making art full time, in his large and deserted wharehouse ateliers in Amsterdam, with the help of other local artists and creative professionals.
The latest one is an abandoned greenhouse complex that used to be a rose nursery, which is significant since flowers (more specifically a rare breed of tulip) play an important role in the next upcoming novel, Nightglow.

IMMERSIVE EXPO
His former atelier and exhibition ´Oxzana's Journey', was located on Hamerkanaal, Amsterdam Noord. It closed in spring 2024, after it was completed. Here a guided immersive journey could be made through the magical yet dystopian world of Mellius' first novel, Mendelstov.
Nightglow Nurseries in Amstelveen will also hold an exhibition in the near future, showing the world of the second book, Nightglow. It is currently under construction.

ORIGIN STORY
Mellius was born in Utrecht and has two grown children. In his free time he enjoys riding horses, snowboarding, riding motorbikes and trucks, playing horse polo and daydreaming about his magical worlds. All these hobbies clearly inspired his art and storylines.
Coming from a family of architects and having worked in fashion design, he goes much further than just writing and visual arts. He designs and creates entire alternate realities in amazing detail. All his art has a certain grandeur to it.
